How learning German taught me the link between maths and poetry | Harry Baker | TEDxVienna

I applied to university to study medicine but switched courses to do maths so that I would havemore time to write poetry.

(Laughter) Thank you for laughing at my life choices.

(Laughter) (Applause) And, apart from oneof the first poems I wrote, being a love poem about prime numbers, I told myself that the twoweren't really that linked.

I liked maths because there wasalways a definite right answer, and I liked poetry becausethere wasn't a definite wrong one.

But for me, when I switchedcourses to do maths, I was given the optionof doing maths with a year abroad, and I thought that would bea fun way to live in another country and experience another culture.

So for a year I lived and studiedmaths in Germany, and I thought it would be a good ideato try and learn German because I'd heardit was really popular there.

(Laughter) When I arrived in Germany, my level of language speakingwas approximately: "Hallo, mein Name ist Harry.

Ich bin English.

Sprechen Sie English?" (Laughter) "Nein.

" - "Scheiße.

" (Laughter) Thankfully, as the year went on,my language skills improved slightly, and I'd like to share a couple of thingsthat I learnt along the way.

Now, I am aware that I am talkingabout learning German in a German speaking country, whilst relying on everybodyto understand my English, but don't worry, "Mein Englishist unfassbar gut.

" (Laughter) What struck meabout learning a second language is that whilst everybody hasthat same destination in mind of hopefully becoming fluent, the journeys that we go onare very different.

And measuring your progresson that journey using verb tables and grammar exams, whilst helpful for some, for me didn't fully capture the excitementof what it was to learn another language.

So I began to set up my own milestones for when I knewthat I was making progress.

The first was that oncethose basic building blocks are in place, being able to trust your instincts.

I remember explaininga story to a friend where everything had worked outin the end, and come together nicely, and I found myself using the words,"Alles hat geklappt.

" I don't think I've ever heardthat word before, but as I said it,it kind of made sense to me, because if you clap, that's a very literalcoming together of your hands.

But also if you make a planand it works out, sometimes you feel likegiving yourself a mini-round of applause.

The difference wasthat when I said these words, I knew that it was the right wordto use in that context because it felt natural.

Up until that point, if I didn't knowwhat a word was in German, I was just trying to saythe English word with a German accent, and try and get away with it.

But more often than notthat left me looking like "ein Idiot".

(Laughter) The second stage for me was when you first beginto dream in another language.

A lot of people talk about this, as for all of your external efforts, this is the point when you knowit's finally started to sink in.

And the first dream that I had in German, I dreamt that I was in a German classroomlearning some new vocabulary, which meant that not only hadmy subconscious taken in enough German that I could understandso that I could dream about it, it had also taken in some GermanI couldn't yet understand and was trying to teach itto me in my sleep.

(Laughter) Now, whilst I don't think this is the most foolproof methodof learning a language, it was quite exciting at the time.

But the third stage for me, and the moment when I really kneweverything would be OK, is when you were able to either understandor make jokes in another language.

I absolutely love puns, and whenever any of my non-English friendsare able to make puns in English, I'm always really impressed.

So, a moment came when I was speakingto my German friend who was a poet, and he was talkingabout how, when he has ideas, they begin to snowball into each otherinto a kind of ideas avalanche.

And he told me that the German wordfor "avalanche" was "Lawine".

Without skipping a beat, I said to him, "Hey, if there was a lot of snowbetween the months of March and May, would that be called an 'Avril Lawine'?" (Laughter) And he said, "That's hilarious.

" (Laughter) "You should definitelyput that in your TEDTalk.

They'll all laugh lots.

" (Laughter) I think being able to playwith another language is a very exciting thing, and it's not somethingyou always get an opportunity to do, in particular, [in] grammar exams - well, they don't give youbonus marks for puns, anyway.

What I was experiencing was somethingthat I had experienced before - something that at school, me andmy bitter maths rival / best friend Luke had called "the nerd rush".

This is the feeling you got when you first wrapped your headaround a concept, or were able to solve a problemin a particularly neat way.

This is a feeling I later experiencedwhen I started writing poetry, whether it was when the wordsjust seemed to fall into place, or whether it's coming upwith a particularly satisfying rhyme, or maybe even just thinkingof a ridiculous pun.

For me, the difference was now that I was getting thisin day-to-day conversations.

Whether it was the thrill of beingunderstood by the person in front of me, or just having a kind of slight ideaabout what they were talking about, piecing together simple sentences became like mini-equationsto be solved there and then.

It involved the pattern recognitionand attention to detail that I love from maths, and it combined it with the creativity andthe ability to think outside of the box that I really enjoyed about poetry.

It combined the two in a waythat I had not previously thought about.

And in many ways, German is quitea logical and mathematical language.

I remember asking my housemateswhat the German word for a kettle was.

And I said to them, "How do you callthe thing that cooks the water?" And they said, "Das ist ein Wasserkocher.

" (Laughter) And for me, it just made perfect sense, and there wereall of these moments where - (Laughter) I would be really excited.

I remember when I found out, I came home and I said to them thatthe German word for glove is "Handschuh" - because it's like a little shoeyou put on your hands.

(Laughter) And I thought, that's incredible.

And they said, (Laughter) "Why are you so excited about gloves?" (Laughter) But I came up with this whole listof my favourite words.

My absolute favourite: I learnt that the German wordfor "turtle" is "Schildkröte", which is like a kind of "shield toad".

And when I found that out, I immediately looked up what a snail was, because I hoped that it would bea kind of "shield worm".

(Laughter) It turns out that the German wordfor "snail" is "Schnecke", but the German word for "slug"is "Nacktschnecke", (Laughter) because it's like a naked snail.

(Laughter) And I thought that was fantastic.

(Laughter) And my housemate said,"Why have you brought snails home?" (Laughter) But in a way, this sticking togetherof words could be quite poetic.

I remember learning that the German wordfor "iris" is "Regenbogenhaut", which translates as "rainbow skin", which I think is kind of quite beautiful and still hasthat weird sort of logic to it.

Similarly, I found out the German wordfor "nipple" is "Brustwarze", (Laughter) which means breast wart, which, whilst less beautiful, (Laughter) (Applause) has still gotthat weird kind of logic to it.

So I thought it would be funto try and invent my own words.

And where I lived, in Hannover,there's quite a large Turkish population.

So there's a lot of places that sellkebab and döner and also falafel.

I was really happy to find out the Germanword for "falafel" is "Falafel".

(Laughter) But the German wordfor "spoon" is "Löffel".

If you had a specific spoonthat you only ever ate falafel with, you could call it a "Falafellöffel".

(Laughter) So I've written a poemcalled "Falafellöffel", and it's about a guy called Phil.

You might be able to seewhere this is going.

It does involvesome kind of call and response, which is entirely in German, but I think you guyswill be slightly better at that than they are back in England.

"Phil ist voll.

Die Nacht ist gut verlaufen.

Phil sieht ein Geschäftund er fragt, was sie verkaufen.

"Falafellöffel.

Für Löffelvoll Falafel.

" - which means Falafal spoons,for spoonfuls of Falafel - "Was?" "Falafellöffel.

Für Löffelvoll Falafel.

" "Wie?" "Falafellöffel.

Für Löffelvoll Falafel.

" Phil doesn't speak German,so he’s left a little baffled.

See there’s this fella Phil,and Phil loved falafel.

In a falafel raffle he wouldsnaffle all the tickets.

He always answers in affirmativeto offers of falafel; even if he’s awfully full,he’d feel awful if he didn’t.

(Laughter) And for us it might feel effortless to live a life falafelless.

(Laughter) But Phil effervescesunless he gets his falafel fix.

So if Phil was everto be offered Löffel of Falafel he'd say "yes" despite not knowingwhat the F a Löffel is! For Phil a life of love and laughterwill have a falafel after.

(Laughter) So it’s "yes" despite not knowingwhat the F a Löffel is.

If a falafel fell off a Löffel,Phil’d feel awful, (Laughter) so it’s "yes" despite not knowingwhat the F a Löffel is.

A fluffy falafel is often iffyif he’s honest, but it’s "yes" despite not knowingwhat the F a Löffel is.

If half a Löffel of filthy falafelis overly lethal, even as we leave Philhe’d still have a message for his kids, saying "yes" despite not knowingwhat the F a Löffel is, always "yes" despite not knowingwhat the F a Löffel is.

So when I say: "Wie viel Falafelist zu viel Falafel?" - which of course means: How much falafelis too much falafel? - could you reply in unison, as one: "Vier Löffel voll Falafelist zu viel Falafel.

" - (Laughter) which of course means: Four spoonfulsof falafel is too much falafel! - If anyone doesn't speak German, I can talkyou through it, if you repeat after me: "Vier"- Audience: Vier Harry Baker: Löffel voll- Audience: Löffel voll HB: FalafelAudience: Falafel HB: ist zu vielAudience: ist zu viel HB: Falafel.

Audience: Falafel.

HB: Wunderbar! (Laughter) Wie viel Falafel ist zu viel Falafel? Vier Löffel voll Falafelist zu viel Falafel.

" "Falafellöffel! Für Löffel voll Falafel!?" "Ja - Falafellöffel!Für Löffel voll Falafel!" You’ve got to make an effortwhen you travel! (Applause) One of my favourite poets in the UK,called Disraeli, once said to me that learning another language is like learningto think in another colour.

And I've spoken to other peoplewho say they feel like they have different personalitiesin different languages.

And I learnt quite early onwhilst learning German that when I express an opinion in English,I would often say things such as: "I think, maybe, if you want,we could possibly do this.

" Or: "I feel like, you know,if it's not too much trouble, possibly we could do that.

" And whilst in English that just makes mesound very unsure of myself, in German, it rapidly affectsthe sentence structure, and then I didn't knowwhere to put the verbs.

(Laughter) The result of thiswas that the German Harry became a lot more decisive and directabout what he wanted to say than English Harry, purely because I lackedthe language skills to be able to doubt myself in that way - (Laughter) which was an incredible thing.

Another side effectwas that whilst in English I think I'm slightly more comfortabletalking to a thousand strangers than one-on-one kind of small talk, in German, because I was so excitedabout learning the language, small talk with strangersbecame like homework.

I was really excited to ask questions and learn quite simple factsabout other people's lives because that was the sort of vocabularythat I could understand.

Similarly, I was really excitedto talk about myself because I needed to practise.

And so whilst German taught mea link between maths and poetry that I hadn't previouslybeen able to imagine, it also taught me things aboutmy own personality that I hadn't expected.

And I realized that these milestonesI'd given myself in German, and learning a language, were things that I've seen before.

When it came to maths, whilst it might be difficult at first to get your head aroundthe basic building blocks, once they're in place, I think then you can begin to have funwith it and jump between them and trust your instinctswhilst doing that.

When it comes to writing, if you can immerse yourself enoughin the world of a poem or a story, then it becomes possible for these ideasto seemingly come from nowhere.

I've often gone to bed,or just fallen asleep in the daytime, whilst writing a poem, and when I wake up,there'll be a new idea there, that's almost as if I've triedto teach it to myself in my dreams.

And the final thingwas with these two things, as with learning German,as with many other aspects of my life, I realized that once you put the work in, you can get comfortable enough withsomething, and be willing to take risks, but also have fun with it.

That's when you can really startto put yourself out there.

After I finished my year abroad, I came back to my final yearat university in Bristol, and I was moved up from the beginners German classto the advanced German class.

And, whilst at the end of the year I did quite well inmy listening and speaking exams, I still managed to failmy final grammar exam.

I did, however, pass my maths degree, and since then I've been ableto do the poetry full time, and travel around the worlddoing what I love doing.

So in a way it's beenquite a unique and weird journey but everything has "geklappt".

Wedding Guest Haul ft. Oasis, Zara, Ted Baker, H&M, Warehouse, Closet: Haul ROX S02E3/8

And what I really like about it is the tie drawstring,and so, really shows off your figure.

And it's quite classy.

It reminds of the sortof thing that Kate Middleton or Pippa Middleton might wear.

So, very classy and sophisticated.

And from Zara, I got this blazer for 59.

It's like a light blue, kind of lilac, colour, and it's very fitted.

It's got one littlefastening.

Kind of crape material, I'd say, but very sophisticated, like I said.

And chuckthis on with a little dress.

It gets a little bit hotter in the evening, I'll take thisoff, but it's probably best to wear a jacket to a wedding and this blazer's perfect forthat.

So this dress is a little bit higher in theprice range.

So we've got some really gorgeous paneling.

We've got some coral withthe lace detailing.

It really clinches in at thewaist, with this, like fan div, and then just floats over you.

It's got quite intricate knotted detailing.

Really elegant.

I wouldn't wear flats to a wedding.

You needa pair of heels.

If you're wearing a dress, it really shows off your legs if you wearheels, and heels are perfect for a formal occasion.

I think flats are too, too casual.

I bought these ones for 49.

99 from Zara, and they're not a ridiculous height in heel height.

I think you shouldn't go too over the top with heel height for a wedding, because you'renot in a nightclub.

They look really classy, they look really sophisticated.

And they'vegot like a little ankle strap that crosses over in the middle, and a little bit of toeon show.

Paint your toenails.

It will look great.

And they're in a nude colour.

You don'twant anything too bright, too out there.

You want to look quite classic and simple, andthese will tie in with any outfit that you choose to wear for this wedding.

If I wasyou, I would probably get a clutch bag that matched my shoes, just to complete the outfit.

If a shorter dress isn't for you, you canalways wear a maxi dress to a wedding.

It's so pretty.

It's really, really flattering becauseit makes you look really tall, because of all the pleats going vertically.

I love abit of lace, and this is so intricate.

Today I would like to give you a job.

To answer the question.

The good news is that the question is quite simple, in terms of its content.

Bad - that people were trying to answer them for thousands of years.

We were a little early twenties.

And this is not the scenario we chose.

He chose us.

He chose us because we did not want to answer this question.

If you do not want to answer this question, certainly will be someone (company, person, government entity) who will be happy to find the answer for you.

And you wake up one day and find that you are living according to someone else's script.

It works more or less like this in the US: In elementary and junior high school they teach us how to learn.

We go to high school, grades begin to count.

And if you have good grades in high school, you get the privilege of.

debt to tens of thousands of dollars to pay for college In college, you're doing a lot of different things, and finally you get the coveted title, a piece of paper, which goes by the promise of safe operation.

A stable, well-paid jobs.

Then you get an apartment full of junk, and if you have not been able to attract a partner college, it now with these junk sure you succeed.

2-3 years later you have children, you may be promoted and changing housing and continue this cycle for the next 30-40 years of his life until I reach the "promised land" - retirement.

Naturally, there is nothing wrong in this scenario.

Unless.

you do not want it.

We discovered it at the kitchen table, that we live according to the default scenario and we do not want that.

So we asked what we want.

The answer took us some time.

But we discovered that we want to "clean up the account.

" Erase the whole damn thing is present in our lives.

So we sell everything superfluous, and the rest to throw two backpacks, that we will carry with you.

We repay $ 18 000 loan, which reflects our reckless spending and we spend a year traveling around Australia the whole family.

That was our goal, which we have planned.

A year later, my wife Courtney took this picture.

It's me and my daughter Milligan, now has 3.

5 years We are sitting in the plane on the way from Indianapolis, Indiana.

Year of conversation between the kitchen and the picture was very heavy.

We had to analyze a lot of things to look deep in our image, that was not so, we would like to make people viewed.

We had to change a lot of habits and beliefs, to get there.

But we managed to do it.

When we were getting on the plane, we had 2 backpacks and most necessary things, no $ 18 000 debt, which started and we took our way to Australia.

From Indianapolis to Chicago, Chicago to LA where nieprzespaliśmy night, we finally arrived to Sydney.

From Sydney we got to Cairns, a city lying just off the Great Barrier Reef.

Sleepless 28 hours flight with a one-girl.

I'd show you how we looked like being on the spot, but we made a pact, that no living person will not see these photos.

But I'll show you another picture of our trip.

We felt like a movie.

When we got to the top, we looked at the private beach And then it dawned on me like never before.

And I realized that just live our dream.

But I ask you, what happens when that person loses his job? What happens if he gets a better offer in another city? When you have to adjust physically, emotionally, financially to any situation in life? In the best case, they are at a standstill, stagnation, kept in a snare, have a lock before adapting to any situation, by the amount of stuff they have.

But we have a way, a little cunning trick to facilitate that process: We put them here.

Did you know that behind this millionth business, allowing you to flip the old junk, we can make a change and buy new lumber! At this point, there are 2.

22 billion square feet of warehouses in the US alone.

It's amazing.

Every man, woman and child, can stand shoulder to shoulder and fit under indoor warehouse if needed.

So what is it? Why we're obsessed with buying new things, while being tied to the old? How "wkupiliśmy 'in this addiction? I think it's a certain kind of myth.

The myth, which says that the acquisition of things and pursuit of the environment, filled with different things, guarantee our safety.

Many of us think that it will give us the happiness! And in the pursuit of things we begin to identify with them.

You can determine who succeeds and who does not; Who is stellar, and who is not.

Whose garage looks like I showed, and whose vice versa.

So we begin to identify with our things.

But the truth is that we realized that most people ever see in your life, is the fact that more things, especially junk, will not give you security.

I certainly can not also happiness.

In fact it was quite the opposite, when Courtney and I sold more and more things.

I often ask this question.

Do you ever regretted the sale of a thing? Or have you ever had to buy back previously sold thing? And always, when I ask when and telling my story, I try to think about it honestly.

Right now.

And the answer is always the same: NO Not a single item that sold did not cause me grief.

Never after the sale did not say: "I feel so insecure" It was completely the opposite.

As we sold our layers of junk, we felt, if we pulled down the weight.

We felt more flexible, efficient.

Ready to repel any negative moments in life and more open to the possibilities.

We were no longer restrained by the obsession of ownership.

We started the way other people perceive, to see that their identity is not based on material things, but on experience.

It is not about collecting expensive and beautiful things.

Only a rich and interesting experience.

We should identify with the people and ourselves on the basis of experience, not what we have.

I would also like to talk to you more about the American Dream.

And he is no longer even an American, only applies to the entire world.

And partier idea that if you work really hard, You can buy into August in this fantastic lifestyle.

And this is still true.

The more stress and suggest that consumerism is a problem for us.

Perfectly we use them every day.

What causes it, when we want to buy this lifestyle, apologetically, in what we are great, we have more work to pay off the debt.

So it keeps us at work.

Would not it be great if they liked your work? Most of us do not like their jobs.

Actually, most of the highly unpopular.

So we no longer have the flexibility to change it - because we have a debt.

Not only do we have to pay the bills, but also the debt.

So we go back to work, which we do not like and sit in it longer.

Is there a better recipe for stress on this planet? Than spending the majority of present life on the job you hate, to pay the debt that dragged a good few years ago? Normal, that are stressed or overworked.

And as we are doing with this stress? There are two main ways: We eat and buy.

We escape from the grind of the marketing.

We deserved because we work hard.

So we justify.

Someone buying clothes, someone else gadgets.

Most of the leaves in warm countries to get away from your work.

But we do not have the money yet.

So we borrow.

We pay for the escape of even greater debt.

And you see that it works like a ball of snow.

It's a cycle that ties millions around the world.

I want to tell you today that you are too valuable to be stuck in this.

Nigel Marsh spoke at TED w Sydney And he put it much better than me.

He said: In the world there are thousands of people living in quiet desperation, przepracowujących long hours at work, they hate, to be able to buy things they do not need, to impress people they do not like.

When I first heard it in his speech at TED, It not just almost knocked me off my feet, but it was painful when repeating because it is so true.

I'd like you imagined, how your life would look like if you decided from today collect experiences rather than things.

Imagine how much power and flexibility introduce it into your life.

If you removed the specter of circulating stress and debt.

Imagine how they were bigger impact on the world in which we live, if each of us woke up in the morning because the caller does not alarm, but with excitement for the coming day of work, we love, or business based on our passion The problem is complex, but the solution is very simple.

Remove the weight that holds you back.

Remove junk from your life, remove the obligation, and you'll be more free to start work on which you really care.

This is the way to safety.

This is the way to happiness.

Another observation, which I have for you: Do you realize that we are the most free people in history? We are among the freest creatures that ever trod the earth? What are you doing with that freedom? How you use this great gift that you have? Start with a simple question.

What is for you FREEDOM? Only your own answer has the power to change your life.

This answer will change your world, if you let it.

So my task for you, then go out today and find the answer to this question.

And it will be worth the idea to share.

Harry Baker: A love poem for lonely prime numbers

My name is Harry Baker.

Harry Baker is my name.

If your name was Harry Baker,then our names would be the same.

(Laughter) It's a short introductory part.

Yeah, I'm Harry.

I study maths.

I write poetry.

So I thought I'd startwith a love poem about prime numbers.

(Laughter) This is called "59.

" I was going to call it"Prime Time Loving.

" That reaction is why I didn't.

(Laughter) So, "59.

" 59 wakes up on the wrongside of the bed.

Realizes all his hair ison one side of his head.

Takes just under a minute to work out thatit’s because of the way that he slept.

He finds some clothes and gets dressed.

He can’t help but look in the mirrorand be subtly impressed How he looks rough around the edgesand yet casually messed.

And as he glances out the window, hesees the sight that he gets blessed with of 60 from across the street.

Now 60 was beautiful.

With perfectly trimmed cuticles,dressed in something suitable.

Never rude or crude at all.

Unimprovable, right on time as usual,more on cue than a snooker ball but liked to play it super cool.

59 wanted to tell herthat he knew her favorite flower.

He thought of her every second,every minute, every hour.

But he knew it wouldn’t work,he’d never get the girl.

Because although she livedacross the street they came from different worlds.

While 59 admired 60’sperfectly round figure, 60 thought 59 was odd.

(Laughter) One of his favorite filmswas "101 Dalmatians.

" She preferred the sequel.

He romanticized the ideathey were star-crossed lovers.

They could overcome the oddsand evens because they had each other.

While she maintained the strict viewsimposed on her by her mother That separate could not be equal.

And though at the time he feltstupid and dumb For trying to love a girl controlledby her stupid mum, He should have been comfortedby the simple sum.

Take 59 away from 60,and you’re left with the one.

Sure enough after two monthsof moping around, 61 days later, 61 was who he found, He had lost his keysand his parents were out.

So one day after schoolhe went into a house As he noticed the slightly wonkynumbers on the door, He wondered why he’d neverintroduced himself before, As she let him in, his jawdropped in awe.

61 was like 60, but a little bit more.

(Laughter) She had prettier eyes,and an approachable smile, And like him, rough aroundthe edges, casual style, And like him, everythingwas in disorganized piles, And like him, her mum didn’t mindif friends stayed a while.

Because she was like him,and he liked her.

He reckoned she would like himif she knew he was like her, And it was different this time.

I mean, this girl was wicked, So he plucked up the courageand asked for her digits.

She said, "I'm 61.

"He grinned, said, "I'm 59.

" Today I’ve had a really nice time, So tomorrow if you wantedyou could come over to mine? She said, "Sure.

" She loved talking to someonejust as quirky, She agreed to this unofficial first date.

In the end he was onlyready one minute early, But it didn’t matter becauseshe arrived one minute late.

And from that moment onthere was nonstop chatter, How they loved "X Factor,"how they had two factors, How that did not matter,distinctiveness made them better, By the end of the night they knewthey were meant together.

And one day she was talkingabout stuck-up 60, She noticed that 59 looked a bit shifty.

He blushed, told her of his crush: “The best thing that never happenedbecause it led to us.

” 61 was clever, see,not prone to jealousy, She looked him in the eyesand told him quite tenderly, "You’re 59, I’m 61, together we combineto become twice what 60 could ever be.

" (Laughter) At this point 59 had tears in his eyes, Was so glad to havethis one-of-a-kind girl in his life.

He told her the verydefinition of being prime Was that with only oneand himself could his heart divide, And she was the one he wantedto give his heart to, She said she felt the sameand now she knew the films were half true.

Because that wasn't real love,that love was just a sample, When it came to real love,they were a prime example.

(Applause) That was the first poem that I wrote and it was for a prime number-themedpoetry night -- (Laughter) -- which turned out to bea prime number-themed poetry competition.

And I became a prime number-themedpoetry competition winner, or as I like to call it,a prime minister.

(Laughter) And this is how I discoveredthese things called poetry slams, and if you don't know whata poetry slam is, it was a format come up within America 30 years ago as a way of tricking peopleinto going to poetry events by putting an exciting wordlike "slam" on the end.

(Laughter) And each performer gotthree minutes to perform and then random audience memberswould hold up scorecards, and they would end upwith a numerical score, and what this meant is, it kind of broke down the barrierbetween performer and audience and encouraged the kindof connection with the listener.

And what it also means is you can win.

And if you win a poetry slam,you can call yourself a slam champion and pretend you're a wrestler, and if you lose a poetry slam you can say,"Oh, what? Poetry's a subjective art form, you can't put numbers on such things.

" (Laughter) But I loved it, and Igot involved in these slams, and I became the U.

K.

slam champion and got invited tothe Poetry World Cup in Paris, which was unbelievable.

It was people from all around the worldspeaking in their native languages to be judged by five French strangers.

(Laughter) And somehow, I won, which was great, and I've been ableto travel the world since doing it, but it also means that this next piece is technically the best poem in the world.

(Laughter) So.

(Applause) According to five French strangers.

So this is "Paper People.

" I like people.

I'd like some paper people.

They’d be purple paper people.

Maybe pop-up purple paper people.

Proper pop-up purple paper people.

"How do you prop uppop-up purple paper people?" I hear you cry.

Well I.

I’d probably prop up properpop-up purple paper people with a proper pop-uppurple people paperclip, but I’d pre-prepare appropriateadhesives as alternatives, a cheeky pack of Blu Tackjust in case the paper slipped.

Because I could build a pop-up metropolis.

but I wouldn’t wanna deal with all thepaper people politics.

paper politicians with theirpaper-thin policies, broken promiseswithout appropriate apologies.

There’d be a little paper me.

And a little paper you.

And we could watch paper TVand it would all be pay-per-view.

(Laughter) We’d see the poppy paper rappersrap about their paper package or watch paper people carriersget stuck in paper traffic on the A4.

(Laughter) Paper.

There’d be a paper princess Katebut we’d all stare at paper Pippa, and then we’d all live in fear ofkiller Jack the Paper-Ripper, because the paper propagandapropagates the people's prejudices, papers printing pictures of thephotogenic terrorists.

A little paper me.

And a little paper you.

And in a pop-up populationpeople’s problems pop up too.

There’d be a pompous paper parliamentwho remained out of touch, and who ignored the people's protestsabout all the paper cuts, then the peaceful paper protestswould get blown to paper pieces, by the confetti cannonsmanned by pre-emptive police.

And yes there’d still be paper money,so there’d still be paper greed, and the paper piggy bankerspocketing more than they need, purchasing the potpourrito pepper their paper properties, others live in povertyand ain’t acknowledged properly.

A proper poor economywhere so many are proper poor, but while their needs are ignoredthe money goes to big wars.

Origami armiesunfold plans for paper planes and we remain imprisonedin our own paper chains, but the greater shameis that it always seems to stay the same, what changes is who’s in powerchoosing how to lay the blame, they’re naming names,forgetting these are names of people, because in the endit all comes down to people.

I like people.

'Cause even when the situation’s dire, it is only ever peoplewho are able to inspire, and on paper,it’s hard to see how we all cope.

But in the bottom of Pandora’s boxthere’s still hope, and I still hope'cause I believe in people.

People like my grandparents.

Who every single day since I was born, have taken time out of their morningto pray for me.

That’s 7892 days straightof someone checking I’m okay, and that’s amazing.

People like my aunt who puts onplays with prisoners.

People who are capableof genuine forgiveness.

People like the persecuted Palestinians.

People who go out of their wayto make your life better, and expect nothing in return.

You see, people have potentialto be powerful.

Just because the people in powertend to pretend to be victims we don’t need to succumb to that system.

And a paper population is no different.

There’s a little paper me.

And a little paper you.

And in a pop-up populationpeople's problems pop up too, but even if the whole world fell apartthen we’d still make it through.

Because we’re people.

For me, poetry has been the ultimate wayof ideas without frontiers.

When I first started, the people who inspired mewere the ones with the amazing stories, and I thought, as an 18-year-oldwith a happy life, it was too normal, but I could create these worldswhere I could talk about my experiences and dreams and beliefs.

So it's amazing to be herein front of you today.

So this last one is called"The Sunshine Kid.

" Thank you very much for listening.

Old man sunshine was proud of his sun, And it brightened his dayto see his little boy run, Not because of what he’d done,nor the problems overcome, But that despite that his dispositionremained a sunny one.

It hadn’t always been like this.

There’d been times when he’d triedto hide his brightness, You see, every starhits periods of hardship, It takes a brighter lightto inspire them through the darkness.

If we go back to whenhe was born in a nebula, We know that he neverwas thought of as regular, Because he had a flair about him, To say the Midas touch is wrong But all he went nearseemed to turn a little bronze, Yes this sun was lovedby some more than others, It was a case of Josephand his dreamcoat and his brothers Because standing out from the crowdhad its pros and its cons, And jealousy created enemiesin those he outshone Such as the Shadow People.

Now the Shadow Peopledidn’t like the Sunshine Kid, Because he showed up the dark thingsthe Shadow People did, And when he shone he showedthe places where the Shadow People hid, So the Shadow People hadan evil plan to get rid of him, First up -- they made fun of his sunspots, Shooting his dreams from the sky,their words were gunshots, Designed to remind himhe wasn’t very cool And he didn’t fit in with anypopular kids at school.

They said his head was up in spaceand they would bring him down to Earth, Essentially he came from nothingand that is what he was worth, He’d never get to goto university to learn, Only degrees he’d ever showwould be the first degree burns From those that came too close, they told him he was too bright, That’s why no one everlooked him in the eyes, His judgment became clouded So did the sky,With evaporated tears as the sun started to cry.

Because the sunshine kid was bright,with a warm personality, And inside he burned savagely Hurt by the words and cursesof the shadowy folk who spoke holes in his souland left cavities, And as his heart hardened,his spark darkened, Every time they called him namesit cooled his flames, He thought they might like himif he kept his light dim But they were busy telling lightningshe had terrible aim, He couldn’t quite get to gripswith what they said, So he let his light be eclipsedby what they said, He fell into a Lone Star State like Texas, And felt like he’d been punchedin his solar plexus.

But that’s whenLittle Miss Sunshine came along Singing her favorite songabout how we’re made to be strong, And you don’t have to be wrong to belong,Just be true to who you are, because we are all stars at heart.

Little Miss Sunshine was hot stuff, The kind of girl when you looked at her you forgot stuff, But for him, there was no forgetting her, The minute he saw herher image burned in his retina, She was out of this world,and she accepted him, Something about this girl meant he knewwhenever she was next to him, Things weren’t as dark as they seemed,and he dared to dream, Shadows were nowhere to be seen;when she was there he beamed, His eyes would light upin ways that can’t be faked, When she grinned her rays erasedthe razor-tipped words of hate, They gave each other nicknames,they were "cool star" and "fun sun," And gradually the shadowydamage became undone, She was one in a septillion,and she was brilliant, Could turn the coldest bloodedreptilians vermillion, Loved by billions,from Chileans to Brazilians, And taught the Sunshine Kidthe meaning of resilience.

She said: “All the darkness in the world cannot put out the lightfrom a single candle So how the hell can theyhandle your light? Only you can choose to dim it,and the sky is the limit, so silence the critics by burning.

” And if eyes are windows to the soulthen she drew back the curtains And let the sun shinethrough the hurting.

In a universe of adversitythese stars stuck together, And though days became nightsthe memories would last forever, Whether the weathermansaid it or not, it would be fine, 'Cause even behind the cloudsthe kid could still shine.

Yes, the Sunshine Kid was bright,with a warm personality, And inside he burned savagely, Fueled by the fireinspired across galaxies By the girl who showed him belief.

If you follow my channel you already know that I love Modcloth, it's an american site specialized in vintage/retro inspired clothes where you can find some unique pieces.

I hadn't been on it for a while, so when in the mid of September I logged in there were a lot of new products waiting for me and I bought 3 pieces.

I featured the first one among my September faves because I'm obsessed with it I'm talking about this 50ies inspired flared skirt grey with a black polka dots print I love how it fits and I love the fabric because it's neither too heavy nor too light, and apparently I developped an obsession for grey and you'll see it recurring among my purchases.

By the way I remind you that, as usual, on my blog you'll find the list of all these clothes with direct purchasing links so if you like something you just need to click on the link in the infobox and you'll find the list so if I don't mention the prices, because I can never remember them or if want more details, the best way is to head over to my blog.

So the first favourite is this skirt that I already wore a whole lot.

The second favourite is another skirt it's a bit different though, it's still flared, but it has a floral print all over with very autumnal colors The fabric is a light polyester, but warm enough for this season I liked the idea of a fall floral print because it adds an hint of color but it's quite muted so it doesn't look like a summer skirt I haven't worn it yet, but I'm sure I'll do it very soon because I love the print Always on Modcloth I also bought a pair of shoes, pardon me while I grab them that I featured in my September favourites video too so I'll show them quickly now, they're some faux suede grey flats with some cute bows and cutouts all around They are comfy, cute, not too boring and I wear flats a lot because they're easy to pair and comfy So these were my 3 Modcloth purchases.

Then I have a few Ted Baker pieces The first one is this basic wool sweater, but the peculiarity is this bow made of ribbon I like it because it's a basic piece, but with a twist I like how it fits and usually I like to wear this kind of sweaters in late autumn and winter, so when I saw it I had to get it and I paid it I can tell you because there's still the label on, 99 pounds which is quite a lot, but if you're familiar with Ted Baker you know that it's quite expensive.

so a sweater and then I got a wool cardi I like that its a bit tighter on the waist without buttons and it's super simple and basic and easy to pair in many different ways Then I bought a dress that I wore during my UK road trip and during the fair in Frankfurt if you watched the vlogs you probably noticed it I love it, it has this cute cutout on the neckline a big zip on the back It's tight on the waist and falls nicely on the hips and it has the same cutouts at the bottom too Maybe it's a bit too short for me, but I love it and I think that with some thick tights will look great moreover it even has pockets, which is always a plus in a dress Now let's move to Asos, at the end of August, taking advantage of the sales I bought this simple red dress it has the classic cut I like, tight on the waist and flowy on the hips with a round neckline and the brand is Club L there no price on the tag, so I can't tell you, but I'll link it on my blog and it has this cute detail on the sleeve, three golden domed buttons that add a retro flare to the dress.

Always on Asos I also got.

BAM goes the hanger I also bought this skirt it's really structured, flared, highwaisted and the brand is Coast it's quite chic, it has pockets and I haven't worn it yet but I liked the idea of pairing this structured, plain, black skirt in many different ways, for example with a leather jacket for a more edgy look, or with a white blouse for a more preppy look or with a little sweater, so there are plenty of possibilities for a skirt that in my opinion will be highly wearable throughout fall and winter Ok, those were my Asos purchases, I hope I'm talking quickly enough because I still have a few pieces to share so let's move to Zara For a while I didn't manage to find anything interesting in Zara but this time I found 2 pieces that I really love The first one is this lacey top quite sheer and see through so you have to wear something underneath I like the contrast collar and this short flowy sleeves it comes down straight as you can see I wore it during the fair in Frankfurt too because it's a piece that can be formal, but you can also make it look more casual.

The second piece I got from Zara is quite unusual for me it's a long dress and I don't wear often long dresses mainly because as I'm not very tall they make me look chubbier and shorter but this one c-c-c-onquered me.

Lol c-c-c-c this one conquered my heart as soon as I saw it it has a autumnal floral print and it's tight on the waist but falls nicely on the hips it has a little collar and 3/4 sleeves and once I tried it on I fell in love and I had to have it because sometimes it's nice to try new styles too Ok, those were my 2 Zara purchases Now let's move to Primark I've been in Primark in Frankfurt, because everytime I'm in a city with Primark I have to check it out in Italy we only have one, in Arese, and it's quite hard to buy Primark clothes as they don't sell online either.

Not all the times I find some interesting things but this time apparently I did find a lot starting from this black and white long and quite basic cardi these are the classic go - to pieces, the ones that you end up wearing throughout fall and winter during Fall you can wear it as a coat and in Winter as a warm cardi simple, straight, long, perfect to pair with pencil skirts, with jeans and in many other ways and I paid it 22 euros as usual Primark prices are unbeatable and it's a basic piece I'm sure I'll wear a lot Then I got a top, you saw me trying it on in my Frankfurt vlog here it is and I paid it 13 euros I love the floral print I like the 3/4 slightly frilled sleeve the frilled neckline and it has another frill on the chest I think it will look great both with jeans and skirts and a cute top for 13 euros it's something you can't go wrong with very similar, because once again it has a floral print, it's this blouse, always from Primark I paid it 13 euros too I'm obsessed with this little bow I love the round collar with a contrast edge present on the pocket and on the cuffs too It's cute and light, perfect to pair with a chunky cardi or in this middle season with a leather jacket Then.

C'mon hurry up, I don't to talk too much a cascade cardi, the ones with the buttons to wear crossed like so it's soft and lightweight perfect for the middle season and it's grey yes, grey again and I paid it 14 euro we're almost at the end, the last two pieces are jeans that I got from Primark I paid these ones 17 euro and I think the other ones too which I featured in my September favourites video They are skinny ankle jeans with the fraied edge I like how they fit they're slightly elasticated and they have some rips and cuts at the bottom and a bit everywhere they are the classic blue jeans, easy to pair with everything and the other ones that I featured among my September favourites are grey, they come a bit longer and once again are ripped and I'm loving them a lot.

Grand Slam Poetry Champion | Harry Baker | TEDxExeter

My name is Harry BakerHarry Baker is my name.

If your name was Harry Baker,then our names would be the same.

(Laughter) It's a short introductory part.

Yeah, I'm Harry.

I study maths.

I write poetry.

So I thought I'd startwith a love poem about prime numbers.

(Laughter) This is called "59.

" I was going to call it"Prime Time Loving.

" That reaction is why I didn't.

(Laughter) So, "59.

" 59 wakes up on the wrongside of the bed.

Realizes all his hair ison one side of his head.

Takes just under a minute to work out thatit’s because of the way that he slept.

He finds some clothes and gets dressed.

He can’t help but look in the mirrorand be subtly impressed How he looks rough around the edgesand yet casually messed.

And as he glances out the window, hesees the sight that he gets blessed with of 60 from across the street.

Now 60 was beautiful.

With perfectly trimmed cuticles,dressed in something suitable.

Never rude or crude at all.

Unimprovable, right on time as usual,more on cue than a snooker ball but liked to play it super cool.

59 wanted to tell herthat he knew her favorite flower.

He thought of her every second,every minute, every hour.

But he knew it wouldn’t work,he’d never get the girl.

Because although she livedacross the street they came from different worlds.

While 59 admired 60’sperfectly round figure, 60 thought 59 was odd.

(Laughter) One of his favorite filmswas "101 Dalmatians.

" She preferred the sequel.

He romanticized the ideathey were star-crossed lovers.

They could overcome the oddsand evens because they had each other.

While she maintained the strict viewsimposed on her by her mother That separate could not be equal.

And though at the time he feltstupid and dumb For trying to love a girl controlledby her stupid mum, He should have been comfortedby the simple sum.

Take 59 away from 60,and you’re left with the one.

Sure enough after two monthsof moping around, 61 days later, 61 was who he found, He had lost his keysand his parents were out.

So one day after schoolhe went into a house As he noticed the slightly wonkynumbers on the door, He wondered why he’d neverintroduced himself before, As she let him in, his jawdropped in awe.

61 was like 60, but a little bit more.

(Laughter) She had prettier eyes,and an approachable smile, And like him, rough aroundthe edges, casual style, And like him, everythingwas in disorganized piles, And like him, her mum didn’t mindif friends stayed a while.

Because she was like him,and he liked her.

He reckoned she would like himif she knew he was like her, And it was different this time.

I mean, this girl was wicked, So he plucked up the courageand asked for her digits.

She said, "I'm 61.

"He grinned, said, "I'm 59.

" Today I’ve had a really nice time, So tomorrow if you wantedyou could come over to mine? She said, "Sure.

" She loved talking to someonejust as quirky, She agreed to this unofficial first date.

In the end he was onlyready one minute early, But it didn’t matter becauseshe arrived one minute late.

And from that moment onthere was nonstop chatter, How they loved "X Factor,"how they had two factors, How that did not matter,distinctiveness made them better, By the end of the night they knewthey were meant together.

And one day she was talkingabout stuck-up 60, She noticed that 59 looked a bit shifty.

He blushed, told her of his crush: “The best thing that never happenedbecause it led to us.

” 61 was clever, see,not prone to jealousy, She looked him in the eyesand told him quite tenderly, You’re 59, I’m 61, together we combineto become twice what 60 could ever be.

(Laughter) At this point 59 had tears in his eyes, Was so glad to havethis one-of-a-kind girl in his life.

He told her the verydefinition of being prime Was that with only oneand himself could his heart divide, And she was the one he wantedto give his heart to, She said she felt the sameand now she knew the films were half true.

Because that wasn't real love,that love was just a sample, When it came to real love,they were a prime example.

(Applause) That was the first poem that I wrote and it was for a prime number-themedpoetry night - (Laughter) - which turned out to bea prime number-themed poetry competition.

And I became a prime number-themedpoetry competition winner, or as I like to call it,a prime minister.

(Laughter) And this is how I discoveredthese things called poetry slams, and if you don't knowwhat a poetry slam is, it was a format come up within America 30 years ago as a way of tricking peopleinto going to poetry events by putting an exciting wordlike "slam" on the end.

(Laughter) And each performer gotthree minutes to perform and then random audience memberswould hold up scorecards, and they would end upwith a numerical score, and what this meant is, it kind of broke down the barrierbetween performer and audience and encouraged the kind of connectionwith the listener.

And what it also means is you can win.

And if you win a poetry slam,you can call yourself a slam champion and pretend you're a wrestler, and if you lose a poetry slam you can say,"Oh, what? Poetry's a subjective art form, you can't put numbers on such things.

" (Laughter) But I loved it, and I got involvedin these slams, and I became the U.

K.

slam champion and got invited tothe Poetry World Cup in Paris, which was unbelievable.

It was people from all around the worldspeaking in their native languages to be judged by five French strangers.

(Laughter) And somehow, I won, which was great, and I've been ableto travel the world since doing it, but it also means that this next piece is technically the best poem in the world.

(Laughter) So.

(Applause) According to five French strangers.

So this is "Paper People.

" I like people.

I'd like some paper people.

They’d be purple paper people.

Maybe pop-up purple paper people.

Proper pop-up purple paper people.

"How do you prop uppop-up purple paper people?" I hear you cry.

Well I… I’d probably prop up properpop-up purple paper people with a proper pop-uppurple people paperclip, but I’d pre-prepare appropriateadhesives as alternatives, a cheeky pack of Blu Tackjust in case the paper slipped.

Because I could build a pop-up metropolis.

but I wouldn’t wanna deal with all thepaper people politics.

paper politicians with theirpaper-thin policies, broken promiseswithout appropriate apologies.

There’d be a little paper me.

And a little paper you.

And we could watch paper TVand it would all be pay-per-view.

(Laughter) We’d see the poppy paper rappersrap about their paper package or watch paper people carriersget stuck in paper traffic on the A4.

(Laughter) Paper.

There’d be a paper princess Katebut we’d all stare at paper Pippa, and then we’d all live in fear ofkiller Jack the Paper-Ripper, because the paper propagandapropagates the people's prejudices, papers printing pictures of thephotogenic terrorists.

A little paper me.

And a little paper you.

And in a pop-up populationpeople’s problems pop up too.

There’d be a pompous paper parliamentwho remained out of touch, and who ignored the people's protestsabout all the paper cuts, then the peaceful paper protestswould get blown to paper pieces, by the confetti cannonsmanned by pre-emptive police.

And yes there’s still be paper money,so there’d still be paper greed, and the paper piggy bankerspocketing more than they need, purchasing the potpourrito pepper their paper properties, others live in povertyand ain’t acknowledged properly.

A proper poor economywhere so many are proper poor, but while their needs are ignoredthe money goes to big wars.

Origami armiesunfold plans for paper planes and we remain imprisonedin our own paper chains, but the greater shameis that it always seems to stay the same, what changes is who’s in powerchoosing how to lay the blame, they’re naming names,forgetting these are names of people, because in the endit all comes down to people.

I like people.

'Cause even when the situation’s dire, it is only ever peoplewho are able to inspire, and on paper,it’s hard to see how we all cope.

But in the bottom of Pandora’s boxthere’s still hope, and I still hope'cause I believe in people.

People like my grandparents.

Who every single day since I was born, have taken time out of their morningto pray for me.

That’s 7892 days straightof someone checking I’m okay, and that’s amazing.

People like my aunt who puts onplays with prisoners.

People who are capableof genuine forgiveness.

People like the persecuted Palestinians.

People who go out of their wayto make your life better, and expect nothing in return.

You see, people have potentialto be powerful.

Just because the people in powertend to pretend to be victims we don’t need to succumb to that system.

And a paper population is no different.

There’s a little paper me.

And a little paper you.

And in a pop-up populationpeople's problems pop up too, but even if the whole world fell apartthen we’d still make it through.

Because we’re people.

For me, poetry has been the ultimate wayof ideas without frontiers.

When I first started, the people who inspired mewere the ones with the amazing stories, and I thought, as an 18-year-oldwith a happy life, it was too normal, but I could create these worldswhere I could talk about my experiences and dreams and beliefs.

So it's amazing to be herein front of you today.

So this last one is called"The Sunshine Kid.

" Thank you very much for listening.

Old man sunshine was proud of his sun, And it brightened his dayto see his little boy run, Not because of what he’d done,nor the problems overcome, But that despite that his dispositionremained a sunny one.

It hadn’t always been like this.

There’d been times when he’d triedto hide his brightness, You see, every starhits periods of hardship, It takes a brighter lightto inspire them through the darkness.

If we go back to whenhe was born in a nebula, We know that he neverwas thought of as regular, Because he had a flair about him, To say the Midas touch is wrong but all he went nearseemed to turn a little bronze, Yes this sun was lovedby some more than others, It was a case of Josephand his dreamcoat and his brothers Because standing out from the crowdhad its pros and its cons, And jealousy created enemiesin those he outshone Such as the Shadow People.

Now the Shadow Peopledidn’t like the Sunshine Kid, Because he showed up the dark thingsthe Shadow People did, And when he shone he showedthe places where the Shadow People hid, So the Shadow People hadan evil plan to get rid of him, First up -- they made fun of his sunspots, Shooting his dreams from the sky,their words were gunshots, Designed to remind himhe wasn’t very cool And he didn’t fit in with anypopular kids at school.

They said his head was up in spaceand they would bring him down to Earth, Essentially he came from nothingand that is what he was worth, He’d never get to goto university to learn, Only degrees he’d ever showwould be the first degree burns >From those that came too close, they told him he was too bright, That’s why no one everlooked him in the eyes, His judgment became clouded So did the sky,With evaporated tears as the sun started to cry.

Because the sunshine kid was bright,with a warm personality, And inside he burned savagely Hurt by the words and cursesof the shadowy folk who spoke holes in his souland left cavities, and as his heart hardened,his spark darkened, Every time they called him namesit cooled his flames, He thought they might like himif he kept his light dim But they were busy telling lightningshe had terrible aim, He couldn’t quite get to gripswith what they said, So he let his light be eclipsedby what they said, He fell into a Lone Star State like Texas, And felt like he’d been punchedin his solar plexus.

But that’s whenLittle Miss Sunshine came along Singing her favorite songabout how we’re made to be strong, And you don’t have to be wrong to belong,just be true to who you are, because we are all stars at heart.

Little Miss Sunshine was hot stuff, The kind of girl when you looked at her you forgot stuff, But for him, there was no forgetting her, The minute he saw herher image burned in his retina, She was out of this world,and she accepted him, Something about this girl meant he knewwhenever she was next to him, Things weren’t as dark as they seemed,and he dared to dream, Shadows were nowhere to be seen;when she was there he beamed, His eyes would light upin ways that can’t be faked, When she grinned her rays erasedthe razor-tipped words of hate, They gave each other nicknamesthey were "cool star" and "fun sun," And gradually the shadowydamage became undone, She was one in a septillion,and she was brilliant, Could turn the coldest bloodedreptilians vermillion, Loved by billions,from Chileans to Brazilians, And taught the Sunshine Kidthe meaning of resilience.

She said: “All the darkness in the world cannot put out the lightfrom a single candle So how the hell can theyhandle your light? Only you can choose to dim it,and the sky is the limit, so silence the critics by burning.

” And if eyes are windows to the soulthen she drew back the curtains And let the sun shinethrough the hurting.

In a universe of adversitythese stars stuck together, And though days became nightsthe memories would last forever, Whether the weathermansaid it or not, it would be fine, 'Cause even behind the cloudsthe kid could still shine.

Yes, the Sunshine Kid was bright,with a warm personality, And inside he burned savagely, Fueled by the fireinspired across galaxies By the girl who showed him belief.

The Business Wilderness: A chat with the Co-Founder of Qalo Ted Baker

Today, I have a very specialguest, Mr.

Ted Baker.

How are you? - I'm very well, thankyou for having me today.

- Welcome, welcome, anytime.

You come from a veryinteresting background, and interesting business.

Many people basicallyexperience this daily, monthly.

Many people experienceit once in their life.

Can you tell us a bit aboutwhat problem you have solved for these people? - So.

Well, yeah, my name is Ted Baker.

One of my best friends andI, my co-founder and I, started a company called Qalo.

- Qalo.

- Qalo.

- Qalo.

- Yeah.

- If you don't know what that is, Qualo stands for QualityAthletics Love and Outdoors.

He and I each married ourwives about a month apart, and immediately found a pain point in this newfound, this greatnew thing we call marriage.

And the pain point was,the happiness of our wives with our inability to find a way to want to wear a wedding ring.

- So, there you go, people.

All of you do this, evenin a week, or a month, or in a year.

There you go, you got married,at some point in your life.

- Yeah.

For those of us who have gotten married, at least for me, as a male.

I know, for females, veryaccustomed to wearing rings.

For me, I had never worn a ring, I didn't want to wear a ring.

My partner and I both were, you know, we were beating ourselves on the head.

We worked together at the time, and we were both complaining incessantly about how terrible it was tohave to try to wear a ring.

I tried for about a week,I had just got a new car, I was very excited, I got married, I got a new car, all thesethings were happening.

I'm scratching up my car with my ring.

You know, I'd spent all this money, I wanted to just basically take it off.

So, eventually, of course,my ring found its way to my side table, or whatever, and I just stopped wearing it, so.

I had a very interesting interaction with my wife, one day,she came up and asked me if I was ever going towear my wedding ring, and I looked at herand said, probably not.

Because it didn't really fit my lifestyle.

- It didn't.

- And she may have usedan explicit word with me, and told me that I should figure it out.

And so, I then went back to work, began speaking to my now, you know, business partner about it, and we came up with this idea to solve this problem.

And that's it, you know like-- - Tell us the solution? - It's very simple, it's a Qalo ring.

And it just, you know,a couple months of that, and we needed to fix the problem.

So, we fixed it for ourselves,and, now, seemingly, we've apparently fixed it for an awful lot of other people, so.

And we're now, here today, in Australia, because we're coming to the market, here.

We recognise that theAustralian market is, even though it's not, youknow, a huge numbers market, we feel like the DNA of the Australian, that commitment aspect,that who you guys are, like, at the base ofyour, you know, person, a lot of you are occupational, a lot of you work with your hands, you know, there's a lot ofdifferent things like that, there's a lot of sport,you know, a lot of sport going on, here.

And we just felt like itwas a really good synergy, for a place for us to go internationally.

And we've opened in Canada.

You know, we're basedin the United States, we opened in Canada,Australia's our next market, and then we're going withthe EU later this year, which we're very excited about.

Basically, bringing ourbrand, and our mission, kind of to, you know, theinternational culture, because it's really about the mission.

I mean, the mission of the company is to inspire and sharethe power of commitment.

You know, it doesn'tmatter if it's your wife, or your kids, or, you know, your job.

Your sport, if you have.

You know, if yourmother, father, you know, are fighting a disease, you know, like, my mom died of colon cancer when I was a child, my sisterbattles lupus, right now.

We have a Lupus ring.

We do a lot of charity,a lot of give-back.

We sit on a lot of boardsfor philanthropic things, something I think is very important when you're starting a business, to start giving back really soon.

So, it's been a realgift, our journey's been a real gift, it's been interesting.

- Amazing.

- Yeah.

- Some touching words.

So, when did the journey start? - You know, the moment we got married.

We each got married in2012, July 8, for me.

It was later that year, about August, about a month later, thatwe kind of recognised that we needed to fix this problem.

My wife had looked at me, she had given me those words.

And then it.

I had done some otherbusiness things in the past.

My co-founder came on, and looked at me, and said, we've gotta do this.

Like, let's start a business.

And at the time, I was doinga couple of other things.

And I was being very successful, you know, I had finally.

I had worked years and years to get to a point of success, andI was doing relatively well, I felt like I was doing well.

And he was like, I'll do it with you, like, we can do this together.

And, like, it was that inspiration of him being like, wecan do this together, I'll do it with you, whichreally turned the corner for me, and made me say, like,okay, I would like.

That sounds like a great idea.

I think having somebodythat you trust and value as a business partner is a huge benefit.

You know, being in business,one of the first things you hear is, watch out for your partner.

- Yeah, exactly.

- And it's amazing howmany warnings I've had, from mentors.

And choosing a partner islike choosing a spouse.

- Yeah.

- If you choose the right one, it's going to be the greatest ride, ever.

And it's just aboutchoosing the right one.

So, I got lucky inchoosing the right wife, and now I've gotten very lucky in choosing the right business partner.

And his name's CaseyHoliday, he's an amazing guy.

Just at the core of hissoul, a great human being.

And I think that's.

I think that's what we need to look for in business partners, in relationships, in all things we do.

If we are looking to the right people, and having the right personalrelationships with them, I think that is a gamechanger, and that's kind of what I've always leaned onfor when I'm doing business, and I'm doing work.

I kind of have a propensityto be overly loyal, sometimes.

But, I think if you're dealingwith the right human being, and the people have the right agenda, then you should be all in,and do everything you can.

'Cause, at the end of the day, there's.

Nothing is perfect.

If somebody is always agreeing with you, there's something wrong.

- Sure.

- You know, you have to have a banter, and you have to be big enough, and be able to put your own ego aside, at times, to get around, and makethe business kind of grow.

And that's one of the things I think is extremely pivotal for many businesses.

People can't get around their own ego, so they wind up trashingwhatever great it is about the business, becausethey can't get around their own ego.

And I think that's oneof the things that.

My wife keeps me in very goodcheck with that, as well.

(laughing) So, she does a lot ofdifferent things for me.

Keeping my ego in check is one thing that she does extremely well, so.

- So, with such a uniqueconcept, I mean.

Coming into the market,and selling the idea of having a ring that's,say, that's made out of a few different.

- Polymers.

- Yeah, what is it?- Polymers.

- Yeah, polymers.

The key point in selling these rings wouldn't haven't beenthe actual ring, itself, it would have been.

Or, this is basically my assumption, from what I've seen, it would have been the message, or themovement behind the ring.

- Yeah-- - Because, let's face it, I mean, you can go down to your local store and just grab a ring.

I call it rubber, here, rubber ring, and put it on.

So what were some of the key factors that really took this concept, this idea, off the ground? - Well, I guess.

First of all, we were never really trying to sell you a ring.

We were trying to sell you a way of life.

We're trying to sell you.

You know, we're sellingyou an emotional value, we're selling you functionality, a representation ofsomething so much bigger than a piece of gold,metal, silver, or rubber.

- Correct.

- This is a representation of who you are.

And, to build that community was, like, the basis of the company really exploding.

Because it needed to be morethan just selling a ring, it needed to be selling a lifestyle.

And that's what we've tried to do, we've tried to, you know.

If you walk by, in the United States, at this point, and I'm very realistic, like, we're still in a growth stage.

We've had three years, where.

I'm not anybody importanton Google, we're like.

I haven't gone.

I have a grind to share with people, I don't have like, somemad dashing success story, it's not like everything is just roses and popping bottles of champagne.

But, you know, the goal wasto sell something bigger.

And when you walk by someonein the United States, if I'm walking in anairport, I see someone else with a ring on, it's a Qalo ring, it tells me somethingabout them, immediately.

And that's what we wanted it to do.

We want this to be arepresentation of who you are on the inside, as a human being, you know, because, in a way, it's the opposite of the way society normally values things.

Normally, society values things as, the more expensive it is,the more meaningful it is.

And I'm trying to go the exact opposite.

I'm saying, wait.

Spend less, and make that show more.

Because if you're wearing a Qalo ring, it says that you're going out of your way, because of an occupational problem, or because of a.

It could be a health reason,because, like, you're allergic to gold metal, or whatever.

What it's saying is that, at all times, you want to represent yourcommitment to your spouse, your family, or to whatever.

And so, it's actuallypeople who really want to represent that commitment even more than a $10,000, you know, wedding ring.

They can spend this,and always have it on.

There's nothing you can't do with this on.

You know, we make 'em special, now, that if you get your hands dirty with gas, or whatever, we cameout with a Q2X material, that facilitates that.

If it's just a comfortability material, you can use the classic.

The goal is to, like, make that show that like, in a way, I love my wife, I represent my wife,I represent my family, I represent my commitment, even greater, and I spent less to do it,but it means even more, because I always want to have it on.

And it's very adversarialto what normal society, you know, like, if I drive a nice car.

It cost more money.

You know, like, I want to saysomething about myself, my.

How much is my suit jacket? Or, you know, my shoes, or whatever it is.

I have 12 year old son,trust me, I know all about.

All about, you know, what itmeans to buy something nice.

And, I want a pair of nice shoes, because people'll think whatever.

And I'm just like, it's notabout how much it costs, son.

- Society's really becomingabout materialistic things.

We can tell, especially ifyou jump on social media, especially the platforms that are really image and video-based, youwill really, really see how materialistic individuals are.

And what Qalo is doingis quite the reverse.

And slowly, slowlychanging that mentality.

- And that's the wholething, we want to change.

You just gave me thetingles, that's awesome.

If I ever get tingles in an interview, normally it's something good happens.

It's literally.

It's going against the grain,and thinking outside the box.

And that's what, youknow, in everything I do, I'm always about.

I look at my leaders, and I say, like, think outside the box.

And people come to me and say, well, that's not how it's done.

I'm like, well, figureout a way to get it done, a different way, that would facilitate.

We're in a very complex world, right now, with e-commerce exploding,brick and mortar dying, there's all of thesethings that are happening around us, and the entirelandscape of business is evolving, we're inthis very crucial time.

And I believe that people need to stop, take a look at things, andnot just go to the norm, but begin to think outside of the box.

I think that's the key for the evolution of things happening, thatwill really drive society.

- Social pressures arereally driving people in quite the other way.

So what you guys are doingis honestly, amazing.

And I'm not just saying thatbecause you're sitting here with me.

There's not many companies out there that represent such, what's the word? Just so I can be fair to you.

That represent such aunique, sentimental value.

Because if you look around, companies in modern day society, work towards what the consumer wants on the surface.

- Right.

- What you guys are doing is,you're telling the consumer, no, this means more to you than what the rest of the gang is telling you.

This is really somethingthat you need to treasure, need to look after, which is basically, that ring there, it's not about the ring.

It's about--- It's about commitment.

- Exactly.

- Yes.

- The family, the wife,the kids, the legacy that you leave behind you.

- Money is only so much.

- Exactly.

Exactly, we hear so many stories of people who are worth millionsand billions of dollars, committing suicide, not happy, miserable.

Yeah, why? Obviously, money is not the solution.

- Money, my wife will tellme on a regular basis, money cannot buy your happiness.

- Exactly, exactly.

- I hear it every day,it's drummed into my head.

We're just, you know, this is a battle, it's a struggle, like,what we're trying to do is not normal right now, it is very much thinking outside the box, and, you know, we're very.

We've been very blessed,we've been very lucky.

I mean, luck, let's behonest, luck has a huge part.

- Hard work, a little bit.

- You have to put in your hard work.

And I always say, I'drather be lucky than smart, because I'm not that smart.

But, you know, I like to surround myself with smart people.

I like to think that whatI value in human beings goes much beyond, youknow, what you pay them, or, you know.

It starts with the culture of the company, it starts with who we are on the inside, you know, the same wayyou, as a human being, what really matters iswho you are on the inside? It matters what's going oninside these four walls, in our building, and what Qalo means, and what we do with ouremployees, how we treat them, how we go.

How we want to representourselves to them, and then how we wantto represent ourselves to the outside world.

And, you know, it's a different time than, quite frankly, when I was really.

Had a real job, per se,when I was growing up, you know, how businessesrun, and what my employees.

Very lucky, my partner is amazing.

One of his goals wasto make our company.

We have very lofty goals.

We wanted to make ourcompany one of the top 100 places to work in thecountry, in the United States.

And, you know, like having goals like that are so much more important than saying, I want to do $100 millionin sales, you know? - That's gonna lead to that.

- Well, that's.

Exactly.

- That's going to lead to that, and that's what many CEOs.

Well, not only CEOs, companies in general, they forget that.

Creating that workplace, that environment, where your employee wants to come to work, and stay there, hedoesn't want to go home, he's happy to be there,because you've created that atmosphere for him.

He's motivated every morning.

He comes there, he's workingfrom somewhere deep inside, not because he has to bethere, to pay the bills.

That's what leads to hundreds of millions, that's what leads to the billion, that's what leads to the soon, and so on, and so on.

- I mean, with this test theory right now, let's hope.

(laughing) Let's hope everythinggoes the way we want.

But, I mean, I will tell you this, that, you know, we.

As far as employees go, Irespect my employees so much, I appreciate them, wheneverI see them, you know, I say I appreciate their hard work.

I'm not even, you know, I'm in the office least of all our employees, probably, because I travel a lot.

I'm doing either licencing deals, or travelling for ambassador meetings, or, you know, giving thistalk, or presentation, or whatever.

So, I'm in the office less than anyone, and it always cracks me up because, I go to the office, or I'll see something, you know, someone will show me something on social media that'shappening in my office.

I'm like, ah, hell, that looks amazing.

How am I not there for that, right now? So, I miss out on those things, a lot.

But, you know, my partnertakes a huge stance on making sure that theculture of the company is sound, and so that's really important.

- Awesome, awesome.

So, tell us a bit about some of your areas that you guys faced,or problems or issues coming to market, like.

Maybe, share that fight withus, so we can, you know? - Well, I mean, we got.

When I say we got lucky, we.

I was very lucky tofind the right partner, have the right thingshappen, but it doesn't matter how lucky you are, it doesn't mean you don't still have headaches.

- You still, in effect, face obstacles.

- Obviously.

I mean, manufacturingwas a huge issue for us.

Trying to.

I.

I tried to get the productmade in the United States.

Because I wanted.

I mean, we're from the US, so I was like, I want it to be made in the US.

We could not find, for months,and months, and months, call after call, meeting after meeting, we couldn't find anybody,you know, at the time, no one ever knew we would grow to, you know--- This size.

- Yeah.

So, nobody wanted to take a chance on you, and we started this companywith all of our own money, we didn't take anyinvestment, everything was.

You know, we worked out of our garage.

You know, like this is as grassroots as you could ever imagine.

And so, we couldn't find anybody else, manufacturing was a huge problem.

I wound up going toAsia for manufacturing, and I know a lot of peoplein the United States say they want everything made in the US, but I would make anargument where innovation actually happens becauseyou find people outside that are willing towork, and take a chance.

That factor of me, me,me, greed, greed, greed, that is very valid in the United States, and people don't want to take a risk.

They only want things that are sure locks, everybody wants something positive.

Nobody wants to take a risk.

So, we found someone to take a risk, and our manufacturing wasn't great at the very beginning,it was a huge issue, it was a huge nightmare.

But we got it done, westarted, we were able to spend a lot of time, afterwe got the product here, fixing the product,making the product right, you know, every product was basically.

Our first couple oforders, our first orders for the first nine months was like, we handpicked every order,put it in a little dime bag-- - Quality control, that is-- - Quality control at its best.

Put it in a little bag that looked like it held drugs, and put in the thing, wrote a personal note,sent everything out.

Like, it was very, verymuch grinding, hands-on.

And, you know, we got through.

We went from one manufacturerto another manufacturer, and then that manufacturer,we outgrew that one, and we went to another manufacturer, and now we have a coupledifferent manufacturers.

But I've actually stayed in Asia.

We were looking at manufacturingin the United States, right now, we're doingsome licencing agreements with some of the militarychannels in the US, they are very.

It's more advantageous ifyou have it made in the US, so we're looking at those things.

But the world is a global market, now, and you know, yes, we go to our facility, we make sure that there'sno child labour laws being broken, and we have.

Actually, have a great relationship with my manufacturer,now, so it's been great.

- Awesome.

Okay, so, just quickly before we go, any tips, words of advice, words of wisdom to all the young people out there who are trying to build businesses? Old, young, they can bewhatever they want to be-- - Yeah, absolutely-- - I'm sure everybody canuse a piece of advice.

- Well, first of all,I'm a big proponent of, you know, starting a businessand trying something new, happens at any age.

It doesn't matter ifyou're 60, if you're 80.

- That's the mostbeautiful thing about it.

- If you're 15.

You can literally, this whole, like.

To use the word entrepreneur,this whole idea behind that is that we are in a society now, where you can literally reinvent yourself, over and over again.

So, when I see somebodywho's 70 years old, and they have an idea, I'm like, why aren't you doing it? - Exactly.

- Like, do it, it's youropportunity, right now, there's no reason.

Ageism should not exist in this.

You know, go.

- It's literally just a number, now.

When it comes to business.

- It's ridiculous.

- You know, like youcan be a genius at 12, or you can be a genius at 80.

- Exactly.

- But words of wisdom are, you know, I guess, figure out who you want to be, figure out what you want to leave behind, and then act accordingly.

Treat people like you want to be treated.

And.

- And be real.

- Yeah, you know? Like, just be up front,just, this is who I am, this is what I believe in.

And just be honest.

More than anything, just be honest.

Do your best, you know? - Honesty's the best policy, I'd say.

- It's crazy.

It's so simple, but ifwe utilise these things, and just like.

You're going to makemistakes, just fix 'em.

When you do something wrong, apologise, and move on.

If the person doesn't accept your apology, and can't get around it, then.

- Time will heal.

- Yeah.

- Time will heal.

- So, I guess that's my word of wisdom.

Just, be honest.
