Welcome back to the Gentleman’s Gazette! In today’s video we discuss button boots.
How you wear them and particularly how youopen and close them using a button hook.
Button boots had their hayday in Victoriantimes and before.
They were usually worn with formal morningwear such as a stroller suit or a morning coat.
Traditionally it features a black leatherthen an off white, sand or white suede insert that was in stark contrast.
It look particularly dapper with the blackand white cashmere stripe pants.
In recent years, button boots have made arevival and they are now paired with jeans, suits and come in different colors and patterns.
Not just suede leather, but also fabrics suchas tweed or flannel.
Overall, it can be worn with a huge rangeof outfits with different formalities.
But what separates then from others are thebuttons.
As you can see there are no laces and itsa tricky technique to put them on properly.
Unlike a shirt or a suit, it is more difficultto button them because the leather is thicker than fabric.
On top of that if your boots fits you perfectly, its a very tight fit and it’s hard to button it with your hands.
Therefore, you need a button hook, it lookslike this.
It should come with every new shoes you purchase if it doesn’t you could go in eBay and find very nice Victorian versions of it for a very small amount.
Back in the day, it is used to be put on yourshoes, but it is fairly simple to do it yourself.
First of all, open your button boot all theway.
I suggest you wear them with over the calfsocks because otherwise your skin sticks to the leather lining which is quite uncomfortable.
Once you put your shoe on you get your button hook through the hole.
It doesn’t matter which direction you insertit.
Third, take your button hook and hook it in the shankunderneath the button.
Now, simply turn clockwise or counterclockwise.
Both work and it only matters where you findmore comfortable.
Usually one way feel more comfortable thanthe other and you just have to figure out what works for you.
Once you have closed your first button, yousimply repeat the process.
It should get easier the further up you get.
Voila! This is how you button the button boot.
Of course, once the boot is buttoned, youalso have to unbutton it.
Now that is a fairly easy task and all youneed is your fingers.
With one hand, pull up the leather and withthe other index finger simply push the button through the hole.
Pulling up helps to open up the button holemore and it’s easier to push the button through.
Just give it a try yourself it’s quite easy, isn’t it? Now if you ever find yourself in a situationwhere you don’t have a button hook, you could still wear them just be prepared thatit takes a little longer and it eats more finger strength.
It basically works the same way as unbuttoningit.
You simply pull the leather and push the buttonthrough from the bottom.
It helps to keep one side to the button alreadyon the edge of the button hole so you can more easily push it through.
